Palm Sunday of 1985, I...

Palm Sunday of 1985, I walked with thousands of Palestinian Christians from the village of Bethany, over the Mount of Olives, down the slope to the Kidron Valley, up to the old city of Jerusalem, through the Lion's Gate (St. Stephen's), following the route of Jesus on that Jewish "Monday." Despite the words of the old hymn, there were probably no children singing nor palms used. We pilgrims of 1985 sang hymns in Greek, English, Armenian, Syrian, Coptic, and Ethiopian. We were clergy, laymen and women, nuns, monks, children, Anglicans, Protestants, Latins, and Orthodox on this Eastern Rite Palm Sunday, all under the watchful eyes of Israeli soldiers armed with machine guns for fear the King we were hailing was Hussein of Jordan.
The procession has been reenacted for 2,000 years now, with olive branches waving. The first procession was a demonstration as they have been for centuries; a demonstration that the Jesus Movement promotes peace, unity, and love for all. Jesus is treated as a king, with gestures, shouts of welcome, and the extemporaneous slogan added to the Psalm, "Blessed is the coming Kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!" The first Palm Sunday was planned and so was this one ... to receive Jesus as a welcome king.
