There is a legend that tells us that when the temple was built the stones were all quarried and cut outside the city, then hauled in to the building site and fitted into place. As the men were quarrying the stone, they threw one rather small stone aside, saying in disgust that it was not suitable for the temple walls. Later, when the stones were all on the site and the masons were working to fit them into place, the right one for the cornerstone could not be found. Search as they would, it was not there. Having an idea of what it should look like, they went out to the quarry and there, among the refuse, was the very stone they needed -- the one the workmen had rejected earlier.
The people of Israel had rejected Jesus. In John's words, "His own people received him not." Yet this is the one who is the cornerstone, the foundation upon which his church is built, and upon which we build our Christian lives.
