For over three generations, since 1881, the Spaffords have managed the American Colony in Jerusalem. While today it is a first-class hotel and a children's clinic and hospital, it has served as a hostel for travelers and a first-aid station for the wounded through several wars. It was started by Horatio and Anna Spafford, devout Presbyterians from Chicago, who wanted to give a Christian witness and do a life of good works. Prominent people through history have visited the American Colony. Peace proposals have been born at parties in the garden. Jews and Palestinians have socialized there because of the Spaffords' outstanding example. During World War I, Bertha Spafford won over the Turkish governor by stating, "We're not offering our services to Turkey or Germany or any other country. We are offering our services to humanity." When the mayor of Jerusalem wanted to surrender to the British in 1917, Anna Spafford gave him a bedsheet on a pole to signal surrender, and thus saved his life as he ventured toward British lines. Our manner of life also ought to be worthy of the Gospel of Christ. All that we do or say ought to result in a witness to him, in spite of enemies or obstacles or difficulties.
