Our text equates a "treaty with death" with the lies and deceit and a firm and strong foundation with faith, justice, and honesty. Jerusalem has opted for the latter and Isaiah announces that.
Any human behavior that traffics in anything other than faith, justice, and honesty represents a "treaty with death" in that it is not life bestowing. Treaties with death can be personal ones or collective ones, such as wanton militarism, racism, and so forth. Kenneth Cauthen has described one such treaty:
