Our text is about the doubt and cynicism of the thief who hung on the cross beside Jesus as others mocked him: "If he is the Christ, let him save himself." One of the thieves did not believe that Jesus was the Christ and the other did, representing the decision that we all have to make about Jesus' identity.
Charles Colson is now well known for his prison ministry that grew out of his Watergate conviction and sentencing. Thousands have read about his conversion in Born Again, and have appreciated this ministry to the outcasts of society.
In one of Colson's recent books, he answers the question in his own mind concerning Christ's identity. Given his affiliation with prisons and criminals, and the tremendous spiritual journey he has pursued, I appreciate his affirmation. When asked what the future holds, he responds by saying that he really doesn't know, and then he adds, "But I do know one thing, Jesus is who He says He is. Knowing Him is all that matters."
Indeed, we don't know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future -- Jesus, the Christ.
