Only once did a person...

Only once did a person present an Acadamy Award to himself, and that was before television. Irving Berlin opened the envelope for the Oscar for the Best Song of 1942. "Irving Berlin for White Christmas." He had a great acceptance speech: "I'm glad to present the award. I've known the fellow for a long time. He's a nice kid and I think he deserves it." The Oscar is a sign -- a symbol of recognition. It's given by people in the movie industry to members of that industry. No one can recognize talent or skill like the people who practice that talent or skill. Entertainers everywhere dream of getting this award. Few signs of recognition are more sought after. It means your work is appreciated. There are a few Scrooges, like George C. Scott, who refused to accept this sign of recognition. Ahaz, the king of Judah, has a unique opportunity. God gives Ahaz the opportunity to name his own sign but refuses. He gets a sign anyway. Even Scrooge had to accept the sign of Christmas. And like Scrooge, none of us really deserves it. -- Mosley
