One of the novelists who quickly caught the attention of the literary world for his suspense-ridden stories is John Grisham, the young lawyer turned author. His early novel The Firm is the harrowing tale about Mitch McDeere, an outstanding graduate of the Harvard law school. He signs on with a prestigious Memphis law firm that offers remarkable perks and handsome financial reward for hard work. To the dismay of his beautiful wife Abby, Mitch literally works round the clock. Not only does Mitch create tension within his marriage, but he soon discovers that he is caught in a vise between a Chicago-based Mafia operation and the FBI. One has to be impressed with the suspense that the dynamics of such a plot creates. Nor can one miss the emphasis on commitment called for from all the participants in this melodrama. The firm demands the total commitment of its new recruit, and Mitch understands that if he is to succeed, he must go beyond normal requirements. The FBI demands no less of its agents. Nor does the Mafia. Whether one is working under the law, inside the law, or outside the law, commitment is paramount. In the end, self-preservation overruled all commitments. Commitment does not always win the day. Something more is needed to make the fulfillment of commitment possible. The prophet speaks to that issue in the description of the Suffering Servant. -- Huxhold
