In one of Fred Speakman's sermons, he tells a wonderful story of redemption (sermon by
Frederick B. Speakman quoted in The Minister's Service Handbook by James L.
Christensen [West-wood, New Jersey: Fleming Revell, 1960], p. 119). It
happened in a Paris Cathedral. Dr. Wheeler Robinson slipped into the back of the church
as the great choir practiced the 23rd portion of the mass: "Agnus Dei, qui tollis
peccata mundi, miserere nobis!" "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the
world, have mercy upon us!"
Dr. Robinson noticed that a man standing beside him was twisting his hat in his hands like a rag, and suddenly he muttered audibly, "O, God! O God, what a dream! If only he could! If only he could!" And with that the man turned and ran out of the church. With the writer of Hebrews, writing to a depressed and besieged people, that congregation was reminded once again of the great high priest who gave his life for us all.
