The old sacrifices performed by...

The old sacrifices performed by the high priest in the Holy Place only helped people "stay even" until the same time in the next year. In order to be reconciled with God, in order to approach God, people needed something different, something effective once and for all. Forty years ago, the ordinary office accomplished its work with typewriters, carbon paper and mimeograph machines. How different that same office would be today. First, there was the advent of the electronic typewriter and the "xerox" machine. Though the first copies from photocopiers were only good enough for "memo" purposes, the technology advanced to the point that now letter-quality and color reproduction is available. But why limit yourself, when with a computer and a laser-printer one can produce very impressive high definition publications? And with word-processing, database, and spread-sheet software, the average office can process far more information than ever before. The significance of advances in office equipment technology can only approximately illustrate the significance of Jesus' sacrifice for human life now and in the life to come. But how many of us have wondered: How did we ever get along before the xerox machine? How could we ever go back? How did human beings "get along" before this sacrifice? How could we ever go back? -- Johnson-Hoy
