Writing about relationships in the church...

Leonard Sweet, writing about relationships in the church, contends that to say "relationship" is to say "conflict." He goes on to declare: "That's why the church needs to resurrect its relationship rituals of repentance, reconciliation, and forgiveness. Within the church we can find much pettiness, anger, and infighting.
Sweet cites one of the worst examples of how not to relate to one another when there is disagreement. He says: "I know a church in California whose prominent pastor stands before the congregation preceding every Communion service and reads the names of people dismissed from membership along with detailed reasons for their dismissal."
How much better it would be to emulate Jesus' teaching about love and forgiveness and to develop rituals of repentance, reconciliation, and forgiveness. The early church amazed the world with better relationships: "Look how they love one another."
