A nobleman in England visited Josiah Wedgewood. He was the first of a family of famous potters. Wedgewood told a young apprentice to give the guest a tour of the factory. The nobleman was a clever, quick-witted man, but he had no reverence.
He captivated the boy by his profane talk. He made fun of Christianity and ridiculed Christian ethics. The young man began to laugh with the nobleman. When the apprentice finished the tour, Wedgewood noticed what an influence the irreverent nobleman had on the young man. Wedgewood took the nobleman back to his office. He held up a beautiful vase. He described the many hours needed to make it. The nobleman asked to see it. Wedgewood deliberately let in slip from his grasp and shatter on the floor. The nobleman was shocked and angry because he wanted the vase.
Wedgewood said, "Sir, there are things more valuable than this vase. Such things can't be restored once they're shattered. Today you shattered that boy's sense of reverence by your attitude and your talk."
