Most of us worship in sanctuaries with windows made of stained glass. Often these windows depict scenes from the life of Christ or offer representations of faith's heroes. So it may well be that sliding into a pew on a Sunday morning, the worshiper is surrounded with the likes of Peter, Paul, Jeremiah, and Isaiah. Literally the worshiper is "surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses."
It is not happenstance that we have stained glass windows like these. We believe that death does not silence the effectiveness of God's people and that, in a sense, they "cheer us on" from their new vantage point.
A classic prayer of the church puts it like this:
God of our fathers: we praise thee for all thy servants who, having witnessed to thee on earth, now live with thee in heaven. Keep us in fellowship with them until we meet with all the faithful in the joy of thy kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
