In Mississippi, the Reverend John Perkins is building a new facility for ministry to honor his son Spencer Perkins, who died prematurely. The new facility is located where Spencer and his friend Chris Rice had formed a unique community. Spencer was African-American and had grown up in the South. Chris was white and had grown up the child of missionaries and then attended college in New England. The two met when Chris went on a college internship into the South to work among African-Americans. What grew out of that was a new kind of Christian witness. Chris and his family moved permanently to Jackson. Spencer and his family continued to live there. Eventually the two developed a racially mixed community who lived and ministered together as a sign of their Christian faith. It was not always easy. At times, each had wanted to throw in the towel. But the community served as a witness to the fact that in Christ, people of diverse backgrounds become sisters and brothers.
