In the mid-1800s, an African-American slave took this scripture seriously and in narratives of his escape into freedom, this story is sometimes recounted as "The Resurrection of Henry 'Box' Brown." One day Henry Brown injured his finger and because of his affliction, requested a short break from labor to recuperate. This was denied. So Brown poured "vitriol" on his finger to make the wound more severe. He applied too much and his finger was eaten to the bone.
