In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis shows rather clearly why God had to become a man in order to save us. His thoughts might be summarized this way: If you were to try to make friends with a wild animal, the initiative to gain its confidence would have to be entirely yours, for a wild animal will not come to you, but will run away. If, however, you move up a scale and wish to be friends with another human being, then there has to be a mutual initiative and responsibility. Otherwise, the friendship will not develop.
