Rowland Hill was a British preacher during the late 1700s and early 1800s. His powerful evangelical sermons set the religious establishment on edge and earned him much hostility from the established church.
During a heavy rainstorm many people took shelter in the chapel where Hill was preaching. "People who make religion their cloak are rightly censured," he remarked, "but I consider that those who make it their umbrella are not much better."
