Marja Sklodowska was born in Poland in 1867. She moved to France and studied chemistry, eventually marrying her colleague Pierre Curie in 1895. Together they worked relentlessly in studying the newly-found phenomenon of radioactivity in uranium ore. In 1903 Marie and Pierre Curie won a Nobel Prize in physics for their work in the field of radioactivity. In 1911 she was awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry for the discovery of the elements polonium and radium, the first person to win a second Nobel. Marie Curie did not invent polonium and radium or their hidden secret of powerful radioactivity. Rather, she and Pierre (until his accidental death in 1906) processed tons of inert pitchblende, refining and reducing it to basic elements. It is radium that is used in radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Sadly, in 1934 Madam Curie died of leukemia due to overexposure to radioactive substances. -- Kelly
