Mandy was seven years old and she was full of questions. "Mom, could you and Dad ever drive me to a Blue Jays game?" After being assured that it might be possible to drive the hour and a half to Toronto, the next question was asked. "What are you doing Thursday night?" The calendar was consulted, and it was discovered that Mom had a meeting but Dad was at home. "Well, then what are we going to do?" Mandy questioned. "There's four tickets." By this time Mandy had her mother's full attention. "What do you mean, there's four tickets?" "I'll have four tickets for the ball game on Thursday," Mandy said, in the tone of voice reserved for those times when children were frustrated with their parents. "Well, maybe Daddy can ask Terry and Cory to go with you," said Mom. Mandy was ecstatic. "That's a great idea. May I go and phone Cory?" "Where are these tickets coming from?" asked Mom. "A teacher at school had them and now I'm going to get them, but I need a dollar first. Can I have a dollar, Mom?" By this time Mandy's mom was really confused. "Why do you need a dollar if the tickets are yours?" she asked. "Because I have to give a dollar to the eighth grade kids at the meeting we're going to tonight. Then I get to write my name on a piece of paper and then they'll tell me that I can have the tickets," Mandy explained. "Do you mean that you are buying a ticket for a drawing?" Mom asked. "Mandy, you know you don't win every drawing you enter." "I know, but I'm going to win this one." Mom and Dad were really worried. They knew Mandy was going to be crushed when she didn't win the tickets. For the next three hours, they tried to tell her that she was not likely to win. But every time Mandy would say, "Yes, I am. You'll see." When they arrived at the school, Mandy went right to the ticket table. She bought her ticket and carefully printed her name, grade, and telephone number. Her parents were amazed when they heard Mandy say, "I don't go to bed until 8:30. You can phone me when I win." After the meeting Mandy and her parents went straight home. Mandy got into her nightgown and was sitting on the couch listening to her story when the telephone rang. "See, I told you I'd win," Mandy yelled as she ran to answer the telephone. Mandy was right. Against all odds, she won the tickets. Against all odds, Mandy's belief that she could win the tickets came true.
