Maltbie Davenport Babcock excelled as a student, a musician, and an athlete at Syracuse University and Auburn Theological Seminary. Prepared for the ministry in the Presbyterian Church, he served a congregation in Lockport, New York. Then he was in Baltimore, Maryland, for 14 years. In 1899 he was called to the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City, but he died after only 18 months.
He wrote verses throughout his ministry, many of them published after his death. One that became quite popular was "This Is My Father's World." He wrote that during his pastorate in Lockport. The poem was inspired by his early morning walks when he would say he was going out to "see my Father's world."
