A recent book by popular psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers is titled How to Get Whatever You Want Out of Life. Some of its contents are: "Using your halo to get what you want"; "You and your success potential"; "The road to riches"; "The power drive"; and "How to make people do what you want."
Jesus teaches from another perspective. When James and John came to him with their "We want" -- "We want you to let us sit with you, one at your right and one at your left" -- they were seeking for themselves positions of prestige and authority. Jesus used this opportunity to teach all his disciples that in his kingdom the motivation for action is not to be "How to get whatever you want out of life" but rather "How can I put something meaningful into life?" He says this is accomplished by a spirit of willing service, by sharing ourselves for the happiness and well-being of others whom God makes it possible for us to help. If Jesus had looked out only for himself, we would still be lost in our sin. But he gave his life to redeem us and put the best of himself into our salvation.
