Last words are important. It might be interesting to track down the last occurrences and
stories we encounter in the Bible. The last words of Moses on Mount Nebo are certainly
significant. Here in our text in Samuel we are given the last words of David. In the New
Testament, there was the last parable Jesus gave. We have the last miracle, the last
disciple called, the last supper. And, of course, we have the last words Jesus spoke from
the cross, and his last words before his ascension. These are just a few of many last words
that have power in the Bible.
Legend has it that one day someone stopped Saint Francis as he tended his garden and asked him what he would do if he knew the world would come to an end the next day. Without looking up he said, "I would continue to hoe my garden."
If you knew that you had one last message to give, what would it be? When General Dean, during the Korean conflict, was held prisoner by the North Koreans, he was told, again and again, that particular day would be his last day before they executed him. So he sat down and wrote what he thought would be his last will and testament. One of the lines he wrote to his son went like this: "Tell Bill the word is integrity."
David's last words as recorded in today's text focus on God: the God of Israel, the rock of Israel, the ruler of Israel, like the sun giving light in the morning. What would your last words be?
