Last Christmas, we heard reports of the merchandising of Baby Jesus dolls, complete with glow-in-the-dark halos. The manufacturer explained: "I think that people are getting to the point where they want something to believe in again. I think any Christian would want one."
He was right in a way! People are looking for something in which to believe. No doubt that hunger explains why so many indiscriminately embrace the teachings of television evangelists despite their excesses of intolerance, manipulation, and oversimplification.
Our text is not talking about belief in dolls or in quick-fix religion. Our text is talking about belief in "the living God" who calls us to "a new covenant" of total commitment and trust in a radical way of life.
