Lancelot Andrewes, who died as...
Lancelot Andrewes, who died as Bishop of Winchester in 1626, was one of the formative figures of the Anglican church. It was a committee under his charge that produced the books of Genesis through 2 Kings of the King James Version of the Bible. As were many bishops of his day, he was deeply involved in the secular affairs of the state, but remained deeply pious at heart, as shown in his book of devotions, Preces Privatae. In 1621, Archbishop Abbot of Canterbury killed a woodsman in a hunting accident, precipitating calls from other bishops for his disqualification from office.
