These words about the fruits of the Spirit and the impact they should have on our lives reminds me of a story about Grandma that I heard years ago.
Dear Grandma died. She had lived to a ripe old age, and it could truly be said of her -- with St. Paul -- "To live is Christ; to die is gain." She was such a testimony to a spirit-led life that her loved ones wanted her funeral to be just such a Christian testimony. All kinds of suggestions were made as to how to make her funeral a living, vital testimony to the Christian, spirit-filled woman she was.
Finally, one of her grandchildren reminded them that Grandma always carried a Bible in her hand and wore a cross around her neck. She was never seen without a Bible and a cross in her later years.
That was it! They would place in Grandma's hands that which was most precious to her in life. As granny lay in repose, there was a Bible -- her tattered, worn Bible -- folded in one hand and her pectoral cross in the other. All agreed! That was Grandma!
What will they place in your hands -- your folded hands -- as you lay in repose -- to best depict in death that which was most precious to you in life? Will it be a Bible and a cross? Praise the Lord!!
Or will it be a TV knob?
a golf club?
a telephone?
a stock market report?
a bottle?
a stitching needle?
a pillow?
