Sometimes the images of crossbearing become a way used by Christians as an excuse for complaining about some physical or mental impairment or anguish. You may ask someone, "How are you?" A person responds, "Well, my bones ache but we all have our crosses to bear so I shouldn't complain." Right! One shouldn't, especially if we have confused cross-bearing with the present moment's infirmity. Cross-bearing, you see, has a purpose. It purposes to make a sacrifice for another. Cross-bearing is more readily seen in monies given, time expended, prayers prayed for others. Cross-bearing means a willingness to die, to give up or give away, to make a sacrifice of ourselves. It means walking a path of trust in a God who is there through it all.
