April 15, 1912, the Titanic, with 1,517 passengers aboard, was sailing the Arctic waters some 1,600 miles northeast of New York City. The passengers were enjoying a party on board. They were toasting one another and singing, "Roll Out the Barrel And Pour Me a Drink," when suddenly there was a shattering jolt. The ship, traveling at high speed, had struck an iceberg. She was sinking fast. The crew called the alarm, "To the life boats!" But there weren't enough boats to go around. A crowd that only minutes before had been drunk and singing was now quite sober and singing, "Nearer My God to Thee." How quickly. How quickly our thoughts move from life to death.
According to a recent pastor's poll most people past fifty years of age are at least quietly thinking about death. A team of Missouri psychiatrists, on the basis of their testing, came to the conclusion that people think four and a half times more about death than they do about sex and romance. This year the book, Life After Life, which deals with the riddle of death, has become a bestseller. People are very much concerned with death and what comes afterwards. What about you? Do you consider death? Do you consider forever?
