Just months after the Cuban revolution, a young woman returned to her family in central Cuba after attending college in New York. The girl was appalled at the war damage, the scarcity of food, and the economic condition of her family and neighbors. As she and her parents sat down to the basic meal of black beans and rice, she was asked to offer grace.
"How can I give thanks when we are in such a deplorable condition? I had to leave college, there is little food, and we are becoming a communist country. I find very little for which to be grateful."
"There is much to thank God for," reprimanded her father. "We are alive, we are together, we have black beans and rice, and whatever happens tomorrow will be in God's hands. We will still give thanks, because God is our Father, and a good father will take care of his children, just as I have always taken care of you."
