John Wesley, after being removed...
Illustration
John Wesley, after being removed from and English pulpit, noted, "There are few matters more repugnant to reasonable people than the grace of God." Perhaps a similar thought led Jim S. Amstutz, pastor of West Mennonite Church, Quakertown, Pennsylvania, to do a tongue-in-
cheek rewrite of "Amazing Grace":
Abrasive Grace,
how sour the sound
that saved a wretch like him!
He once was lost and should be bound,
unkind and not let in.
'Twas grace that taught
my heart to fear
and grace my fears confirmed.
How shallow did that grace appear
the hour they should have squirmed.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
they have already come.
Enjoyed them all
without a scratch
and grace still brings them home!
The Lord has promised
good to them.
His word their lives repair.
He will their shield and cover be,
and that makes life unfair!
