John tells us some Greeks...

John tells us some Greeks came to Philip saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." From antiquity, the Greeks had a reputation as "searchers." One wonders what they were searching for on this occasion, and what led them to think that in Jesus the object of their search could be found.
Many of us are searchers too, but often we are looking for the wrong things in the wrong places. There is a little story about a chap who once found a dollar bill on the sidewalk, and from that moment on he never looked up when walking. And what treasures he found! Over the years he accumulated 31,467 buttons, 19,234 pins, 13 cents, a crooked back, and a miserable disposition.
It's to be hoped that those Greeks were searching for more than a dollar on the sidewalk. And, it is hoped, so are we! If our search is for God and the truth about who we are, where we belong, and what we may become, then Jesus is the place to go, the person to see. If our other searches have brought us to dead-ends, left our spirits empty and our hearts heavy, the search that leads us to Christ will be a search that is headed in the right direction. For then our days of collecting odds and ends will be over. In his presence we will find the object of all our searching: life that is meaningful, abundant and eternal.
