John Fogerty, who was the writer, lead singer, and guitarist for the rock and roll group Creedence Clearwater Revival, went through many struggles. In the '60s and '70s they became one of America's most popular groups. The band's success with "Proud Mary" and "Born On The Bayou" catapulted them into fame, but they ran into problems after some years. John lost the rights to "Proud Mary" and there were tensions among the group over who was to lead them creatively. This led to a bitter split up. For ten years Fogerty refused to perform any of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits. He was even sued for plagiarizing himself. He wrote and recorded "The Old Man Down The Road," which the holder of the rights to "Run Through The Jungle" thought resembled that song too closely. Finally he won that case and with his legal problems behind him began performing the old songs once again. About that time he came out with the hit "Centerfield," which tells of asking the coach to put him in, he was ready to play centerfield. That song was Fogerty's way of saying he had been through the struggles and was back, having survived. Struggles are a part of life for all of us. They can wear us down, they can make us bitter, but with God's help we can come out of them even stronger. The Romans passage talks about the struggle between the law of God and the law of sin. With God's help we can realize that following his way leads us through the struggles we face to the things that are truly important in life.
