John the Baptist testified to...

John the Baptist "testified to the Light" (Christ) by reflecting the same Light in the arena where he was called to serve. Eventually executed for having served faithfully, he set a pattern imitated by courageous martyrs ever since. Such a "testifier to the Light of Christ" was Hugh Latimer, English Bishop of Worcester during the reign of King Henry VIII. Latimer was a major figure in ecclesiastical reform during the reign of Protestant King Edward VI, but was executed by the Roman Catholic monarch, Queen Mary. After a show trial at Oxford, Latimer and the Bishop of London, Nicholas Ridley, were condemned to be burned at the stake for heresy. As the fire was lighted, Latimer turned to his co-
martyr and said, "Be of good comfort, Master Ridley. We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England as I trust shall never be put out." -- Sherer
