Jesus was engaged in prophetic preaching. The barometer of his effectiveness is revealed by the angry reactions of the people. They wished to throw him over a cliff!
Who are the prophetic preachers today? The plush interiors of televised religious settings or large churches infrequently set the scene for prophetic proclamation. Status quo preaching is common. Who are our true pulpit prophets?
Recently the movie Romero was released for television. Archbishop Romero carried out his ministry in El Salvador, caught among the conflict elements of the aristocracy, the peasants, the rebels and the military.
He shyly admits in his installation sermon as archbishop that he is a man of books. His colleagues wonder if he will be able to provide any meaningful leadership. As time goes on, however, the sufferings of the people heighten the intensity of his preaching. Like Luther he can do nothing but preach in that fashion. Finally the day arrives when he is gunned down at the altar. His preaching had so aroused the people that action followed words. Some elected death to silence him. Others chose the life-giving path he offered in the words of the gospel.
What choices does prophetic preaching lay before us today as proclaimers and as listeners?
