Jesus arrived in Bethany at the home of Lazarus at the end of the week (John records: "Six days before the Passover," which was to be a Thursday). The Sabbath day of rest and proximity of Bethany to Jerusalem signaled to Jesus and his friends an end to the journey from Galilee. Perhaps Mary understood better than we can know, or perhaps she sensed a special weariness of soul in Jesus. Whatever the case, it is clear that Mary brought out an expensive ointment and anointed Jesus' feet, wiping them dry with her long hair. Pastors and others who serve as spiritual leaders in our day know how important it is to do and say what is in your heart when the moment presents itself, rather than putting it off. Too often, we hear the lament from a survivor at the death of a loved one, "If only I had ...." But for Mary, in that moment "six days before the Passover," there was no regret. She did the right thing, at the same time, in the right way. Perhaps Judas did not understand because his mind -- and his spirit -- were in another place. We need to do and say what is in our hearts when the moment presents itself. There may not be another opportunity. -- Saxon
