Jeremy, at sixteen, had his first job: scooping ice cream and making iced drinks. He'd learned the flavors, prices, and procedures in a week. He learned faster and worked harder than anyone.

Jeremy was excited to go to work and he liked his fellow workers, although he had doubts about Peter. When the owner wasn't in, Peter would come to work late, talk on the phone while a car waited at the drive up window, and leave early.

One day Peter said to Jeremy, "Everybody gets paid the same, no matter how they work."
