Jaroslav Pelikan's book, Jesus Through the Ages, is a careful study of the various images of Christ that have appeared through the centuries. The various representations of Christ have been developed by people to suit their needs. The manner in which people have popularly portrayed Christ is distinguishable from the way in which theologians have thought of Christ. It is not difficult for any of us to understand this. Artists literally illustrate the point for us by the manner in which they depict Christ. This is especially noticeable in the way Jesus has been painted as an oriental, a Scandinavian, or a black. In the same way Jesus has been depicted in different ways by various cultures.
A point Dr. Pelikan makes of this is that all cultures have had to take the person of Jesus of Nazareth seriously, and that it is not by accident that history is dated from the time of his birth. The New Testament itself reveals the manner in which the evangelists and apostles struggled in their several attempts to make clear how they understood the Person of Jesus Christ. The Second Lesson appointed for the celebration of the Baptism of our Lord indicates how the early Christian community related differently to the Person of Christ and how essential it was that they came to a common experience of Christ through the Holy Spirit.
