Jamie, fifteen, had never been partnered with 58-year-old Mr. Johnson before, but at
Pinewoods Golf Club, the pro always tried to pair up singles to keep the pace of play
moving. Despite their differences in age and ability, they were a good pair -- the intensity
of youth was balanced by the control of middle age. Both Jamie and Mr. Johnson took the
game seriously and played well.
At one point in the match, Mr. Johnson watched from the other side of the fairway as Jamie picked up his ball from an unplayable lie and called out a penalty on himself. When they reached the green, Mr. Johnson said, "You know, Jamie, I would never have known if you'd just kicked that ball out of the woods. I couldn't see you in there."
"Yeah," said Jamie, "but I would have known."
About two weeks later, Jamie was interviewing for a summer internship with a prestigious law firm. He had done well and only had to get approved by the senior partner. As he waited for his interview in the mahogany and leather conference room, Jamie wondered if he had a chance since he was up against much more experienced and well-educated candidates.
But then Mr. Johnson, the senior partner, walked in. He smiled as he recognized Jamie, sat down and chatted for a bit.
"Well, Jamie, there's no need to interview anymore. I'm gonna hire you. Because of your honesty on the golf course, I know you'll be a good intern. Like the good book says, 'Those who are faithful in small matters will be faithful in large ones.' Congratulations, and welcome aboard!"
