It seems impossible to believe that Christianity has, in some cases, moved so far from the humility of Jesus' life and example to the prideful arrogance of churchly hierarchy. But it is a reality, nevertheless.
Here's a case in point: William Cosmo Gordon Lang, the one-time Archbishop of Canterbury, once sat for his portrait. Afterwards, not liking the way he had been portrayed, he complained to the bishop of Durham. He asked his underling what he thought of the piece of art, saying it seemed to show him as "proud, arrogant, and worldly."
Replied the Bishop of Durham, "To which of the three does Your Grace take exception?"
