It is said that, when John Bugenhagen first read Luther's The Babylonian Captivity of the Church, his initial reaction was: "There have been many heretics since Christ's death, but no greater heretic has ever lived than the one who has written this book."
But Bugenhagen had an open mind and he reserved judgment until he had more information. John Bugenhagen later became prime spokesman for the reformation movement and was to become Luther's own pastor at Wittenberg.
