Investing in land during a time of war and conquering armies is either a sign of ignorance or delusion, or it is a sign of great hope. In her book, Hope Was Here, author Joan Bauer develops the character of G. T., a short-order cook and owner of a small diner. He is diagnosed with cancer. In the face of this devastating news, he decides to run for mayor of the town because he wants to bring "as much healthy change into this town as I can before I go." Then, he marries Addie to share more of the depth of love in the time to live that he has remaining. These are visual actions of hope in the face of what appears to be a hopeless situation.
