If there is a hallmark to the Christian life, it is that followers of the crucified do not resort to the tools of the age of darkness when living in the light. During the years he served as president of Harvard University, Charles W. Eliot voiced frequent misgivings about including sports in the college curriculum. At one point he announced that, at the end of a successful basketball season, he was thinking of dropping the sport. The alumni were aghast and demanded an explanation. Said Eliot, "Well, this year I'm told the team did well because one pitcher had a fine curve ball. I understand that a curve ball is thrown with a deliberate attempt to deceive. Surely that is not an ability we should want to foster at Harvard."
