I write these words as the heat of the Presidential race is rapidly increasing. You read them as a new President takes office.
Nehemiah was a leader of action. He rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. He instituted social and religious reforms. He was a leader dependent on God, and a man of prayer.
On this January day we might remind ourselves that good government includes a challenge to hear the words of Ezra, the Levites, and Nehemiah as they remind the people that each day is holy to the Lord.
The celebration of the day of the Lord comes after the hard work of rebuilding Jerusalem, stone by stone. It comes after enemies have been faced. It comes after years of bondage.
This is the time to remind ourselves of the purpose of good government and good leaders. A time for us to be called to celebrate not just at the inauguration of new leadership, but the celebration of God's Word heard through our lives as children of God.
