I recently listened to a hospital chaplain speak about grief. He indicated how difficult it is for some persons to deal with the loss of a loved one. The problem is so complex because so many emotional factors enter into the relationship we have had with the one who has recently departed. There may be guilt because of a strained relationship between the two persons. There can be anger, toward the deceased and God. There is usually a feeling of inadequacy and also of depression.
In order for the grieving person to recover, that person must seek out spiritual help from God, and also allow friends to express empathy and comfort. If a friend says, "I hurt because you hurt," it strengthens a bond between the two of you. The sense of community can produce healing and speed the recovery.
Acceptance is most important if complete recovery is to take place. After David's son passed away, he accepted the fact and soon began to return to his normal obligations and activities. We cannot let the grieving process go on and on; we must move on to the other problems at hand and deal with them.
