I have never met an honest person who will not admit to sometimes feeling what the Preacher expresses: "Vanity of vanities! All is vanity." This feeling comes at the end of a long and difficult day. Or perhaps it comes when success is at hand. For some it comes rarely; others see its visage often. As children of the heavenly Father, however, we know depression is not reality. It comes in times of stress and overwhelming pressure. Depression is an anomaly. Depression and hopelessness are mere shadows that flee when the light comes.
To be depressed and feel hopeless at times does not reflect on one's faith as some would have us suppose. It is a great credit to the Scriptures that this darker side of our nature is expressed as holy writ. The chief purpose of the Bible is not to share darkness, but to spread light -- especially the light of Jesus Christ.
