How often does God appear in a dream and ask us what wish we would prefer to have granted? And, who on earth would think to ask for wisdom, for an understanding mind? I believe those qualities would be rather low, if included at all, on most of our lists. Solomon shows astonishing maturity of judgment in his request. He also demonstrates humility in comparing himself with a child. Children do not normally pursue things that are good for their souls. Instead, they look toward personal pleasure and instant gratification, as do many adults.
