How long has it been...

How long has it been since you have heard the ringing of a real telephone bell? If your house is at all like ours, it has been a very long time indeed. In our home the old fashioned bell has been replaced with a variety of buzzes, tweets and squeaks summoning us to answer the phone.
For me, the pastor who is the father in this home, there is no more annoying sound, particularly on my day off, than that piercing, annoying shriek. It is as grating as a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. Yet I realize that my opinion is not shared by all in the house. To the teen-age daughter of the family, caught up in the infatuation of "young love," there is no more melodious sound. For her the "ringing" of the phone (strange that we still use that term) is welcomed with lovely anticipation, for perhaps it will be "him" calling. How different the same sound can be for two who live in the same house!
Love makes all the difference. Love resonating in our hearts will never be grating or cacophonous, but allow the melodic strains of God's grace to ring clear in our lives.
