Holy Scripture features again and again an emphasis upon the inner life. Verse 7 of this pericope can be joined with sayings in the Psalms, gospels, and especially in the Pauline writings where he calls upon everyone to cultivate and deepen the internal resources of the human spirit. Hence all of us must exercise our Christian responsibility in evaluating life according to the strength of the power within us and by safeguarding that power against outer antagonists. Note in Ephesians 3:16 his advice that we "be strengthened with might by his [Christ's] Spirit in the inner man."
We are told that when the Chinese people built the Great Wall they felt secure against any invading enemy. Yet within a few years a foe succeeded in penetrating the seemingly secure barrier of the Wall. How? They bribed the gate-keepers! Similarly our many grandiose projects and plans are viable and secure only in so far as men and women foster strong moral power within themselves.
