In his book, New Testament Words in Today's Language, (Wayne A. Detzler, New Testament Words in Today's Language, SP Publications: Wheaton, 1986, p. 160), Wayne Detzlen wrote about the word "first." He points out that first grade signals the commencement of the process of education. The child learns that "first" place stands for high achievements. In the teenage years, "first love" is a significant experience. After the wedding comes the unforgettable first anniversary.
The birth of the first child is an experience that alters the way the new parent looks at life. The birth of the first grandchild brings joy. When John calls Christ "the first-born of the dead," he harkens back to a theme from Paul. The final goal of God's purpose for human beings is that they might be shaped to the likeness of his Son! "For long ago, before they ever came into being, God both knew them and marked them out to become like the pattern of his Son, for it is his purpose that his Son should be the first and eldest of a great family" (Romans 8:29-30, The New Testament: A New Translation by William Barclay).
