In her short story, "Revelation," author Flannery O'Connor describes the characters in a doctor's waiting room. Mrs. Turpin enters with her husband, Claud. She surveys the lot of them, noting especially "the ugly girl" with acne all over her face; "the white-trashy mother" with snuff-stained lips; and a child who was dirtier than her hogs on the farm.
Mrs. Turpin concludes at one point, "If it's one thing I am, it's grateful. When I think who all I could have been besides myself ... I just feel like shouting, 'Thank you, Jesus, for making everything the way it is!' It could have been different!"
