Henry Van Dyke in his story "The Keeper of the Light" tells about a lighthouse keeper who died, leaving the responsibility of the lighthouse to his young daughter. One day a crisis developed. The supply boat scheduled to bring food to the isolated village was delayed. In a state of panic the people attempted to get the oil in the lighthouse to use for food. The girl courageously locked herself in the lighthouse and with her father's gun defended the indispensable oil. Eventually the food and supplies arrived. If the girl had not preserved the oil to keep the light burning, the boat could not have found its way to that village, and all would have died.
We must never confuse our priorities or forget what is most precious to us. The treasure we have is Jesus Christ, who is to be guarded at all costs. This treasure makes us a distinctive community of faith. He is the light that shines out of darkness and discloses the knowledge of the glory of God.
