He was being honored on the occasion of his 50th anniversary of ordination. During the segment of the festivities titled "Remarks," he expressed gratitude for all those who had planned the event and those present to share his joy. Then, he added, "You know, I'm not trying to rush anything, but I sat down with the funeral director the other day to plan my funeral. I had counseled parishioners to do that in the past, so I figured it was time for me to take my own advice. Well, as we discussed the details of the service, the funeral director asked, out of curiosity, what I would want imprinted on my grave marker. After some thought, I gave him the following suggested text: 'He was called by God to minister to his people. During that ministry, he experienced endless meetings, occasionally frustrating stewardship campaigns, thousands of delicious potluck suppers, sorrowful times when cherished friends died, joy-filled moments with newlyweds, faith inspiring services of baptism and confirmation, and perspiration-causing situations on Fridays and Saturdays as sermons were prepared for Sundays.' When the funeral director indicated that perhaps that was a bit wordy to place on a tombstone, I gave him a much shorter option. I suggested that he simply put the following three words under my name: 'He was faithful.' "
